My first, Deep Freeze 61, began as fantastic duty in Chi Chi. I was having way to much fun and the powers to be sent me to Williams Field at McMurdo Sound so I could "settle down." Worked as air ground support that year. Returned for Deep Freeze 62 & 63 as Loadmaster on the first four C-130 the Navy operated. I remember one year, most of Williams Field broke away from the main ice and went to sea, as did almost every thing we owned including our runway homes. A great big Hello to those wonderful people who served with me then. It was a pleasure and honor and of course, one of the best and biggest events of my life.

It was just before Christmas in 1960 when I first entered McMurdo Sound in the Antarctic. It was an amazing sight to a 19 year old. Smoke was rolling out of Mt Erebus. To me it was a scene right out of a Science Fiction movie.I'll be 77 this year & I don't think I'll ever forget that experience.

Just dropped in to say nice work on the web site! Looks good! I was with VXE-6 for DF 78 thru DF 80, and was one of the two GSE guys that brought 3,500 psi nitrogen to the ice. The whole Antarctic experience was quite a ride!

I was in DF1 but had to remain at Quonset Point as my father died the week before the Eastwind left port and I was on Emerency Leave. I was a AM and painted the tail of Que Sera Sera. Hello to all DF1 folks.

I'd be remiss if I don't add: the other 2 Watches of B-1 ER of the Eastwind had designed a birthday card for me. The crashed people were alive and we were headed back to McMurdo to complete our mission. A Happy Birthday indeed. All ahead Full.

Wow, 62 years ago the USCGC Eastwind had successfully rushed the last remaining Otter to the Bay of Whales from McMurdo sound to find and rescue the people who crashed coming back from the MarieByrdLand trail party. I turned 25 Feb. 9th, 1956.
