Hi Gabby, Long time, no see! I did 4 W/O. 2 at Pole 64-65 and 2 at McMudhole! Wintered with you and Billy-Ace. Supervised the construction of the first operational ice pier in 1974. Was very surprised when I saw an article, and picture of the ice breaker tied up to a ice pier in 2017!!! Guess my way of building the first one was a good idea! Leave it to the Seabees! We know how to solve problems! Also solved the problem with the water lines going up to the water plant!

Dick Bowers, then a CEC LTJG, was the construction officer for both McMurdo and South Pole Stations during Deep Freeze I. He was a fine officer and is a very good friend. Although he suffers dementia he remembers clearly his/our exploits in Antarctica. He is celebrating his 90th birthday June 19. Send him a card and express your thanks to one of the true pioneers. His address is: Dick Bowers 9999 Hoosier Village Drive, Apt 141 Indianapolis IN 46268

Hello Gabby . I was in VX-6/VXE-6 69-71 , Helo Crew. In 1969 i was involved in an incident in the Upper Wright Valley when we were stranded on a cliff above 5,000ft above the Labyrinth when a blade damper broke and we made a hell of a landing with LCDR DYER . We were on that cliff at -40 degrees for three days before one of our Herc's picked up our signal on the way to Chi-Chi . Looking for anyone who remembers that flight need info on the date of the incident .Please contact me by email at dl79vt@yahoo.com or call me at 1-802-490-8165 Thank You

Glad to be a part of these men who served down on the ice. My winter over was the 1960-61 season and it was an eventful year. I was trained for the GCA unit on Williams Field. We had some exciting times when several aircraft were landed in zero visibility conditions. Then we had the crash witnessed of the Navy WV-2 Super Connie 31 Oct 1960. Then on 9 Apr 1961 VX-6 flew a C-130 mission to the skiway located on the Barrier to retrieve the Russian scientist Leonid Kuperov from Byrd Station who was critically ill. Yes the Antarctic was a memorable experience that I am still remembering like it was yesterday!

I almost daily think about my Deepfreeze I and II experiances and consider the trip via the USSArneb to McMurdo and as a Photographer for 55-56-and wintering 57 as a highlight of my Military career. From testing an immersion water suit, filming the airdrop of the D2 tractor that escaping out of the harness and plunging out of sight at the SouthPole while my cheek lost a bit of skin from the open hatch on the C124. Getting para-rescue jump training before wintering on Deepfreeze II. While wintering being allowed to drag a sled with film projector and showing movies to Sir Edmund Hilary at the N.Z. Scott base on Sat nights And finally getting to marry a lovely New Zealand girl to top off the experance. Would go back to the ice in a heartbeat but alas not to be for this 82 year old Vet.. Ken
