To all of you, wanted to let you know that one of our own, Frank Terrizzi, passed away yesterday at 84. Frank was an AG (Aerographer's Mate, ie weather) Frank had been to the ice 6 summers and 1 winter (I think). He was at Ellsworth(?) camp when they ran low on food and couldn't get resupply. Frank is the only one from Det Charlie with whom I still talked. He will be missed. Farewell to my friend of 55 years. Bill Toburen, AG2 (used to be) Deep Freeze โ€™70 and โ€™71

James, I don't have any records of you being a member of the Old Antarctic Explorers Association (OAEA), however you may be referring to the OAE-FNG One List that was an email board around 1999 to maybe 2003 or so which has long gone away. Sad news for the Old Antarctic Explorerโ€™s Association, Inc. -- as OAEA โ€˜Life Directorโ€™ Billy-Ace Penguin Baker passed away this morning at his home, with his daughter, Kerry, at his side. Billy-Ace was one of the first six Directors (his term of office was 4 years) on the initial OAEA Board of Directors when it was set up on 14 January 2001. At the first OAEA National Reunion in November 2002 in Pensacola, an election was conducted at the General Membership meeting on 7 November 2002. At that meeting, OAEA members in attendance elected Billy-Ace as โ€˜Lifetime Directorโ€™. Billy-Ace has been a driving force in the administration and operation of the OAEA from day one. As both the Editor of the โ€œExplorerโ€™s Gazetteโ€ (since January 2004) and the first OAEA Webmaster, his tireless efforts to support the OAEA have been immeasurable. B-A also created the OAEA-logo, and thanks to his dedication and commitment to the publication of the quarterly โ€œExplorerโ€™s Gazetteโ€ newsletter, he helped place the OAEA alongside the other major associations that concern themselves with polar-related exploration and research, such as The American Polar Society and the Antarctican Society.

I was a Hospital Corpsman (x-ray tech) at the main Dispensary in McMurdo from oct 1968- Oct 1969. I took three flights one back to Christchurch NZ , one to Byrd Station and one to the South Pole Station while on the Ice. I also closed and reopened the dispensary atEilliams field after the last flight out and first flight in. I roomed with the Ship Store person who worked at the ships store during the winter-over period. I worked with Dr Roger Case and a Dentist. Along with Corpsman jack Moore, Eastwood and Manuego who became a supply warrant officer while at McMurdo . I left the ice in Oct of 1969 returning to Christchurch with a radio patient who was injured in a sledding accident along with another Navy man who came out later. You can contact me at larrykrueger3@gmail.com if you would like to correspond with me. I enjoyed my tour in Antarctica and would do it again if I could.

I was delighted to find information about my book "Wyatt Earp - The little ship with many names" in your Explorer's Gazette, Vol.20, 2. With Lincoln Ellsworth as owner for four of the Antarctic voyages it made, it obviously has some interest to people in the US. I have also been doing some research on Australian Sir Hubert Wilkins, who was Ellsworth's "voyage leader and manager" on those 1930s trips. Many years later (1957-1958) he visited the US Wilkes base. I would be delighted to hear from anyone with information about either Ellsworth, Wilkins or the Wyatt Earp.

Greetings to Billy-Ace from the Engineering Officer DF76-79. Did want to mention the loss of Leonard LeSchack around Christmas 2017. He was on the IGY and other varied trips to the ice. He's better known for his CIA activities which, when portions were declassified, is fascinating. Just Google Operation Coldfeet. We talked a lot about the ice and our 20 year gap in being there at our local bar. Also was curious about the Memorial List. Was that deaths on the ice or also in homeport? Billy would remember CEC Ralph Wright. Carried him out to the C-141 and that was the last I saw him alive. Ran into the PAO who followed Gene Valentine. He handled the ANZ-901 crash into Erebus. Only time I see him is on cruise boats in the Arabian or Bering Sea. Small world.

I look at the slides I took during the mid-winter party every once in a while and reflect on the once in a life time opportunity I had to be there. I was the second youngest member of crew. My main job there was to melt snow at the laundry/shower building. I am planning on attending the reunion next year in Jacksonville. I attended the first two but life got in the way of attending any since then.

Glad to be a part of these men who served down on the ice. My winter over was the 1960-61 season and it was an eventful year. I was trained for the GCA unit on Williams Field. We had some exciting times when several aircraft were landed in zero visibility conditions. Then we had the crash witnessed of the Navy WV-2 Super Connie 31 Oct 1960. Then on 9 Apr 1961 VX-6 flew a C-130 mission to the skiway located on the Barrier to retrieve the Russian scientist Leonid Kuperov from Byrd Station who was critically ill. Yes the Antarctic was a memorable experience that I am still remembering like it was yesterday!

From testing an immersion water suit, filming the airdrop of the D2 tractor that escaping out of the harness and plunging out of sight at the SouthPole while my cheek lost a bit of skin from the open hatch on the C124. Getting para-rescue jump training before wintering on Deepfreeze II. While wintering being allowed to drag a sled with film projector and showing movies to Sir Edmund Hilary at the N.Z. Scott base on Sat nights And finally getting to marry a lovely New Zealand girl to top off the experance. Would go back to the ice in a heartbeat but alas not to be for this 82 year old Vet.. Ken

Now, with the proliferation of weather satellites, my military rating has become obsolete leaving me with only memories of a wonderful adventure in my early twenties! Iโ€™m glad to be an OAE in such esteemed company.

My first, Deep Freeze 61, began as fantastic duty in Chi Chi. I was having way to much fun and the powers to be sent me to Williams Field at McMurdo Sound so I could "settle down." Worked as air ground support that year. Returned for Deep Freeze 62 & 63 as Loadmaster on the first four C-130 the Navy operated. I remember one year, most of Williams Field broke away from the main ice and went to sea, as did almost every thing we owned including our runway homes. A great big Hello to those wonderful people who served with me then. It was a pleasure and honor and of course, one of the best and biggest events of my life.

I served on board the USCGC Westward when we went to the Antarctic during Deep Freeze III. I had signed up with your organization several years ago but have never succeed in getting my name on your mailing list. My Coastie Buddy, Ed Reed, always forwards your information to me. Thank you.
