The Old Antarctic Explorers Association is a tax-exempt, charitable organization chartered under U.S. Code 501(c)(3) and is dedicated to:
- Perpetuating the memory of the Antarctic experience and preserving the history and perpetuating the memory of U.S. involvement in Antarctica and to establish public awareness of our organization;
- Uniting all Antarctic explorers and other interested persons in sharing the Antarctic experience;
- Providing scholarship awards assistance for Antarctic explorers’ families and friends via an organized program.
To help support these goals, we request that donations be earmarked for purpose intended. There are 3 options to choose from (and a single donation amount can be split as required):
- Designated to the General fund. Such donation amounts are used for purposes not scholarship related; including business expenses such as procurement of supplies used for recruiting and membership, postage, specialized equipment, maintenance and security of electronic media/website(s), corporate costs associated with maintaining a registered non-profit organization, some reunion assembly general membership business costs, and any other costs as seen necessary and pertinent as per the approval of the Board of Directors.
- Designated to the Scholarship fund for immediate (next school year) disbursement, in the donor’s name. Minimum donation for this to happen is $250.00.
- Designated to the Scholarship fund (any amount) for investment in the mutual funds account which growth is used to support future awards.
Charitable donations to the OAEA are tax exempt. For those over 72 ½ years of age, direct RMD donations can also be made from standard IRAs with no income tax having to be paid on the donated amount. Want to know more? Click here for more information.
All individual donations will be acknowledged by a printable letter, either by email attachment, or by snail mail, as appropriate; suitable for use to support tax exemption requirements. In addition, online donors will receive a receipt at the end of the payment process which can be printed. Cumulative donation amounts of $100.00 achieved over a period of time will be recognized by a “Bronze Adelie Club Level” achievement letter to the donor. Cumulative donation amounts of $500.00 achieved over a period of time will be recognized by a “Golden Adelie Club Level” achievement certificate to the donor. Cumulative donation amounts of $1000.00 will be recognized with a “Silver Adelie Club Level” (or Emperor Club or Communicator’s Club, as appropriate) achievement plaque to the donor.
